My Haircare Routine

Hi everyone. I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on my hair lately so I thought I’d share how I’ve managed to get it so long and healthy. Below I will share the three simple hair products I use (less is more), the hair tools I use and what I ask of my hairstylist when I go in for a cut or blow dry. I’ll also share some advice on how to reach your hair goals.

Washes: I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week. That way it doesn’t dry out from excess shampooing. I like to embrace a little grease and let my hair’s natural oils do their job. Note: I usually use a little bit of dry shampoo in between washes. http://nymbrands.com

Blowouts: When I get a blow out I always ask my hairstylist to minimize the product she puts in my hair after she/he shampoos and conditions it. That way my blowout will last longer and it won’t feel weighed down. I usually ask them to use a little bit of hair serum and that’s it.  My favorite go-to in Santa Monica is Glam and Go located in the Fairmont Hotel (they also have locations in NY, DC and Miami) https://www.glamandgo.com/. They only charge $49 per blowout and do such a great job. If they can’t get me in I will just open my Yelp www.yelp.com/ or Groupon app www.groupon.com/ (why not try to catch a good deal?) and find the salon nearest to me that can get me in.

Haircut: I always ask my stylist for the least amount to be cut off, but to make sure to get rid of all of the dead ends. If a little more needs to be cut off to make it healthier I’m always ok with that. Healthy hair is always more attractive than longer hair. Am-i-right-or-am-i-right? I keep my cut simple. I want the same length all around, no layers. My bangs are a different story, I’m currently trying to grow them out but I will likely end up cutting them again. What can I say, I have a love hate relationship with bangs. I try to get in for a cut every 8 weeks, give or take a week or two.

My Hair Motto: I’m the boss of my hair! I know what I want when I go in to get my haircut. Make sure you do too, otherwise your hairstylist might sway you in a direction you don’t want to go in. They will start saying things like, Are you sure you don’t want some layers around your face? How about we round the back? How about a mermaid shag or some feathered ends? Like what?! NO! It will overwhelm you and you might leave with a haircut that looks great when a hairstylist does it but will be difficult to style on your own.

Hair Products: Test out as many different brands that you need to until you find the perfect shampoo and conditioner. Ask for samples at a salon, they sometimes have them. I can’t even tell you how many shampoos and conditioners I’ve tried. Some of the most expensive brands have been a huge flop, and to be honest, I’m still not completely satisfied with what I have. The closest cruelty free, clean shampoo and conditioner that I found to work well on my hair is Paul Mitchell https://www.paulmitchell.com . Another product I love and have been using since college is Kérastase Nutritive Sérum Oléo-Relax https://www.kerastase-usa.com. It’s pure heaven. Try it out if you need a hair serum. It’s a little pricey but only a little bit is needed so it will last you a long time.

Prenatal for hair growth: A good prenatal is always good for hair growth. I use Ritual Prenatal and I love it https://ritual.com/

Hair tools: My hair tools are the best. I use The T3 Single Pass X 1.5 Ionic flat iron with ceramic plates https://www.t3micro.com/. It is designed to straighten thick or coarse hair to a sleek finish. For a good blow dry I use the Dyson supersonic hair dryer https://www.dyson.com. It’s amazing but quite pricey. For a curling iron I use the old school, Hot Tools Professional gold spring 1-1/2 “ curling iron https://www.hottools.com/.

I know that everyones hair type is different. My hair is curly, not colored and more on the dry side so these products work best for me. My advice is to do a lot of trial and error to find your beloved hair products and reach you #hairgoals. Most importantly, you have to know what your goals are when it comes to your hair. I always knew I wanted long, healthy, non color treated hair. It took me many years to get here but I achieved it! I love my hair!
